Experts offer tips to prevent pipe bursts during weather

Posted: Updated:

As the current weather is causing problems outside, high winds are also causing headaches inside residential homes and apartments.

Bill Schlaepfer of Benjamin Franklin Plumbing and Heating says recently his staff has received more than 40 calls from customers about frozen pipes.

Schlaepfer says the best thing residents can do to avoid pipe bursts and flooding is to let water drip from pipes during the night.

Having water flow may prevent pipes from freezing and bursting.

Another tip is to have cabinet doors under sinks open to allow air to keep pipes warm.

Following these small steps can avoid big financial problems in the end.

"The water damage that can occur can be tremendous. You can have thousands and thousands of dollars and really all it takes is just a little thaw to think, hey it's going to be cold tonight let me turn the faucet on, let it drip." Said Schlaepfer.

Experts say during cold temperatures always check pipes in and around your home frequently.
