SBPS and City of Scottsbluff look at future of Splash Arena

Posted: Updated:

The City of Scottsbluff is working with the Scottsbluff Public Schools to determine the best course of action regarding the indoor and outdoor Splash Arena swimming pools.

The City and Schools have been meeting to discuss options for the future of these facilities.  There are many issues to be discussed such as operational costs, revenues, safety concerns, hours of operation and user groups.

Current State of the Splash Arena Partnership:

  • The Scottsbluff Public Schools own both indoor and outdoor pools.  The City of Scottsbluff has been in a lease agreement since 1975 with the lease expiring in July of 2015.  The School and City have a joint use agreement for the indoor pool but the outdoor pool is exclusive to the City.
  • Operational costs for the indoor pool are split 50/50.  The City is responsible for 100% of the outdoor pool.
  • Recently, the School District contracted with Baker and Associates to do a thorough examination of the structures and determined the cost of needed renovations to be over one million dollars.  This includes, but is not limited to, roof repair, pool deck and wall structural repair, mechanical/air handling repairs and replacements, electrical and fire alarm systems to name a few.

Future Planning:

  • The value of this facility to its users is not in question.  The Splash pools have served many people across the surrounding area since its initial construction in 1976. Both the City and the School District would like to continue to meet the needs of our school and community teams, as well as all other aquatic users, in a reasonable and fiscally prudent manner.
  • Over the coming months, the City of Scottsbluff and Scottsbluff Public Schools will be collaborating with one another, as well as with the community at large, to determine the best available solutions to the issues at hand.
