Gering School District doing away with after school program

Posted: Updated:

Some Gering parents may be scrambling to figure out an after school plan for their children.

The Gering School District is doing–away with their after school program following the upcoming spring 2014 semester.

superintendent Bob Hastings says the district's biggest concern is that the program creates a lot of extra work for the teachers who run it.

"We're having a difficult time running the program in the way that we want to," says Hastings.  "One of our principals actually coordinates the program and I don't want to say it's getting in the way, but it's interfering with her ability to do her job as principal because it requires a lot of time."

The school board discussed the option of hiring a program director but decided the position would cost the district too much money.

Hastings says the final decision was not made strictly because of finances, but because the district doesn't feel like they were doing the program justice.
