Scottsbluff Reconnect Program graduates its first two students

Posted: Updated:

A new generation of students are getting the chance to take the next step in their lives, as the inaugural class of Scottsbluff's ‘Reconnect Program' graduates.

The Reconnect Program was established this year to re-engage students who have dropped out or branched away from the public school setting.

There are currently about 35 students working towards getting their degree, and Wednesday night, the first two students got their diploma.

Coordinator Mario Chavez says the Reconnect Program name speaks for itself.

"It's very important. It's the next step in their life," says Chavez. "I think as far as being successful in life, having your high school diploma will grant you the access and open those doors for you to enter college or start a career."

Graduate Xzilary Trevino says she was ready to drop out of high school. But the programs flexible schedule and one – on – one teaching helped her finally graduate.

"It helped me in so many ways," explains Trevino. "It gave me confidence and it really pushed me to achieve my goals."

Trevino says she now plans to go to college and get her nursing degree.
