Wyoming Dept. of Education drafting new school performance model

Posted: Updated:

The Wyoming Department of Education is developing a new way to rate student performance based on individual growth.

The 'school performance model' or ‘growth model' measures a school's academic success by the growth of its students over the course of the school year.

Goshen County School District Superintendent Jean Chrostoski says Wyoming schools are steering–away from ‘typical testing'.  That's because with typical testing, results only shows whether students meet a certain grade, not how much they've actually learned over the course of the year.

"So that's what a growth model is, says Chrostoski.  "Where did they begin, and where did they end?  Not picking an arbitrary number and making everybody be accountable to that number,  because everybody is different."

Chrostoski says the current ‘school performance rating model' is in draft form but should be ready to rate schools following the 2013 / 2014 school year.
