Alliance school board focusing on math and reading improvements

Posted: Updated:

The Alliance Public School Board has given the green light to form committees looking to improve math and reading programs within the classroom.

The board recently made a policy change that would create a one p.m. dismissal time for students on the first Friday of each month during the second semester.

Superintendent Troy Unzicker says that would leave three hours for professional development time with school staff members.

Unzicker says the main focus will be to improve math and reading. He's hoping to form technology and health committees as well.

He assures parents that students will not be losing any time within the classroom.

"March 4th was suppose to be a parent/teacher conference day where we had no school scheduled. To adjust for that we made March 3rd and 4th parents/teacher conferences. We'll have parent/teacher conferences from four to eight only. And we brought the kids to school on the 4th of March so we made most of that time up in one day and we made small adjustments to the schedule. We'll make sure we don't lose any instructional time." Said Unzicker.

Unzicker says anyone interested in joining a committee can contact his office.
