SBNM celebrates proclamation establishment this month

Posted: Updated:

94 years ago this month President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation establishing the Scotts Bluff National Monument.

Over the years, thousands of people have walked the rocky paths from immigrants traveling the Oregon Trails in the 1900s to visitors during today's time.

All this month, visitors can learn of how the monument became established.

Park Ranger Leslie Gaunt says Wilson's signature in 1919 was the third time the government had try to establish the park as a monument.

Many locals thought that the monument would lose its prominence if it was taken over by the government.

But just the opposite happened says Gaunt.

"It has become a real focal point for visitors. And just as it was focal point for immigrants coming across the plains, it marked a third of the way on the Oregon-California trail. It is the second most often referred to landmark in the diaries of immigrants." Said Gaunt.

Fun fact about the proclamation --- it starts off by recognizing the monument as the highest point in the state; which of course isn't the case.
