Consumers plan to ring in 2014 with a 'bang'

Posted: Updated:

People across the country and the panhandle are set to ring in the new year with a bang.

Fireworks have been flying off the shelves at Discount Fireworks in Scottsbluff.

City ordinance allows the selling of fireworks from December 29 at 12:01 a.m. until December 31 at 11:59 p.m.

Discount Fireworks Owner Eric Wilcox says sales have been great.

Costumers have been coming in and choosing from more than 50 different kinds of fireworks.

This time of year, stores can sell fireworks for a three-day period compared to a ten-day period during the fourth of July season.

Regardless of the shorter time period, Wilcox says sales are still good and people know what they want to buy.

"We found out most people would come in and buy three or four of the bigger items because it's still going to be a little cold that night. It's not like the 4th were you've got all day to light and it's real warm. Most people just buy a few and light them around midnight to celebrate the beginning of 2014." Said Wilcox.

Residents are reminded that possessing or discharging fireworks in city parks is prohibited.

You are allowed to launch fireworks in your own yard.
