Limitations on BBGH visits enforced until further notice

Posted: Updated:

Family and friends visiting patients at Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance are asked to not do so if they are feeling under the weather.

With the flu season in full swing, the hospital's Infection Control Nurse, Mary Mockerman, is asking the public to be aware of their own health before deciding to visit a patient.

Mockerman, whose been with BBGH for more than 30 years, says if someone is feeling ill or has a possible infection, not to visit because they could spread flu-like symptoms or may put patients at risk of an illness.

Children under the age of 15 are asked not to visit until further notice because of the increasing incidence of influenza across the state, regionally and locally among that age group.

Mockerman says visitors can ring in the new year with patients -- just be mindful of their own health.

"If you're too ill to go to work, to ill to go to school, you're probably too ill to go to the grocery store, or to the movies, or to church. Being cognizant of staying out of public places as much as you possibly can when you're ill yourself goes a long way to your recovery and preventing others from getting sick." Said Mockerman.

She says it's not too late to get a flu shot if you haven't already.

She stressed the request is made for social visits, and not if someone has an actual hospital necessity.
