Nebraska legislature set to convene next week

Posted: Updated:

Lawmakers in Nebraska are gearing up to what *they* hope to be a very successful legislative session.
The Nebraska Legislature is set to convene on January 8th.

Big topics for this session will include the death penalty, Medicaid expansion and prison reform.
However governor Dave heineman expects tax relief for Nebraskans to be the biggest issue for 2014.

Currently, the state has $700 million of surplus funds in the state coffers. But some - like Senator John Harms of Scottsbluff- is apprehensive of tapping into those cash reserves.
"I at least want to make sure that we have enough money in there. So the argument will be- and the debate will be- what is enough?"
Nebraska's legislature is the nation's only non-partisan form of state government- meaning senators do not have a Republican or Democrat title.
