New Year's Eve drinkers steer clear of roads

People ringing in the New Year with alcoholic beverages also managed to steer clear of the roads.
Scottsbluff law enforcement were out in full force on New Year's Eve but didn't encounter issues with people drinking and driving.

Lieutenant Jamey Balthazar, with the Nebraska State Patrol, says alcohol is widely used on New Years Eve, but people tend to take the proper precautions.

He attributes the lack of drinking and driving to an increased use of designated drivers and better planning ahead for the holiday.
"The new year's holiday is typically one of the safer holidays to be out on the road," says Balthazar.  "Through years and years of enforcement efforts the public knows that we're pretty much going to be out in force."
Lieutenant Balthazar says there were six alcohol related driving fatalities in 2013.
