Nebraska waters fatality-free during 2013

Posted: Updated:

For the first time in Nebraska history, no boating-related deaths were reported in the last year.
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission says the state usually averages 5 boating-related deaths a year.

The Commission began tracking boating deaths in 1965, and this is the first time since then the state went without any fatalities on the water.

The Games and Parks Commission also says the number of boating accidents decreased last year.

In 2012 there were 44 boating accidents, and only 31 in 2013.
Diligent law enforcement and expanded safety education are being credited as factors in the change
