Book about North Platte train depot named 2014 state-wide reading book

Posted: Updated:

A book about a World War Two train depot in North Platte is getting state-wide attention.

Bob Greene's 'Once Upon A Town: The North Platte Canteen' has been selected as the 2014 'One Book, One Nebraska' state-wide reading book.

The non-fiction story details life in and around the North Platte train depot, as World War Two soldiers prepared to assemble for the war.

The philosophy behind the "One Book, One Nebraska" reading program is to get people engaged in reading.

"To me, personally, I have had to read books that I never would have picked up before," said Sidney Librarian Doris Jensen. "Even as a librarian I chose to do more fiction books, but by being in this book club I have had to read things I never would have picked up, and thoroughly enjoyed them."

To meet the criteria for the "One Book, One Nebraska "programs, books must be written by a Nebraska author, or have Nebraska as a central theme or setting.
