Ads on Yahoo! website hacked, thousands of computers infected with malware

Posted: Updated:

Security has been breached on one of the Internet's most popular websites, infecting thousands of computers with malicious malware.

The advertising network on Yahoo.com was recently hacked, meaning the computers of thousands of people who clicked links on the website were susceptible to infection.

The attacks appear to have occurred on the yahoo website between December 31 and January 3.

Signs of infection include unwanted pop-ups, 'blue screens' and security alerts that the PC is infected with a virus.

Todd Lewis, Chief Tech Officer and Vice President of Bytes Computer and Network Solutions in Scottsbluff, says attacks can happen to any website, at any time.

"And the only way really to prevent those is to number one, keep up-to-date on your security. So you need to patch your computer, you need to keep your antivirus up to date, run scans on a weekly basis, keep your anti-malware up to date and run scans on a periodic basis and overall just do health checks on your machine and learn what's good and what's not good to go to ion the web."

Lewis says anyone that thinks they may have been infected should take their PC in to get it diagnosed.
