Western Nebraska Blood Center in need of O-negative blood

Posted: Updated:

The Western Nebraska Blood Center is severely short on O-negative blood.

Type O-negative can be transfused to patients with any blood type.  So it's always in high demand and also unfortunately in short supply.

Regional West Medical Center Phlebotomist Julie Dahlinger says it's also the rarest blood type, making it even harder to come-by.

"You know, we always need [O-negative] blood," says Dahlinger.  "There's always surgeries; there's traumas.  So we always need to keep it on hand for those reasons."

Dahlinger says type O-negative is extremely important in trauma situations, where large amounts of blood are transfused at once.
