Judge approves Dustin Chauncey's request for new legal representation

Posted: Updated:

The man accused of murdering a Gering toddler back in 2008 has been approved for new legal council.

27-year-old Dustin Chauncey's request that the Nebraska Commission on Public Advocacy be appointed to represent him was granted by Judge Leo Dobrovolny this afternoon.

Jim Mowbray- Chief Council for the Commission said that he would be able to take Chauncey's case.

Chauncey claims the public defender's office has too many cases to give his case adequate time and representation.

Prosecuting Attorney Jim Zimmerman says he wants to keep this case moving, and left it up to the judge on whether or not to approve the reappointment.

Judge Dobrovolny does not think that this case will be heard until at least June, 2014. Chauncey told the judge, "I would be fine with that."

Chauncey is charged with manslaughter and intentional child abuse causing death. The charges follow a January Grand Jury indictment relating to the murder of two year old Juliette Geurts.
