Johanns wary of cost of extending unemployment insurance

Posted: Updated:

U.S. Senate debates have stalled this week on extending emergency unemployment insurance beyond traditional insurance.
U.S. Senator Mike Johanns says unemployment numbers in the country are too high, and more is needed to be done as the economy tries to recover.

However, the proposal before senate would add $6.5 billion to the deficit this year without addressing the lack of available jobs.
"If economist are correct and our debt is making job creation tougher, we shouldn't make the problem worse in the name of helping the unemployed," says Johanns. "It's not responsible to operate this way."
Johanns says lawmakers need to create an environment for businesses to have the confidence to grow and expand, he says adding to the deficit wouldn't help.
Another senate vote on this issue has been scheduled for sometime next week.
