Johanns suggests public hearing in response to recent flight cancellation issues

Posted: Updated:

A U.S. Senator from Nebraska suggests a Commerce Committee hearing in response to recent issues regarding excessive flight cancellations.

In Scottsbluff, cancellations at Western Nebraska Regional Airport continue to plague airline travelers.

It's all because of new federal regulation requiring pilots have more down–time before flying.  As a result, large airlines are hiring pilots from smaller airlines, like Scottsbluff's carrier Great Lakes, leaving them with fewer pilots than needed for scheduled flights.

Senator Mike Johanns says he believes a Commerce Committee hearing is the best way to bring these cancellation concerns to–light.

"The best way of doing that is to hold a very public hearing," says Johanns.  "Bring the airlines in, like Great Lakes, and ask them, ‘What's the affect?  Tell us what's happening.  lay it out'.  And then secondly, bring in the FAA and say, ‘What are you doing?'"

Johanns says he's just now learning about the cancellation issues plaguing smaller airlines and believes many other state senators may not know about these issues yet either.
