Several acres of Gering land rezoned, approved for construction of new storage units

More storage units are coming to Gering, in a move that has some city representatives worried.

At Monday night's council meeting, Gering approved to re-zone some areas of the city to allow for construction of more storage units.

Several acres around the Gering Garden center were approved for re-zoning to allow for construction of storage units.

Land near Lyman Drive was also approved for a conditional use permit, that will allow for additional construction of new storage units.

Council member Larry Gibbs voiced concerns on the proposed construction, questioning if building storage units is the best use of limited city land.

"We're putting an awful lot of our city land into storage units in our commercial areas, and if its not generating any sales tax, I think we've got about enough storage units."
Gibbs says he would prefer to see the city land go to build more housing developments instead of storage units.
