Wyo-braska growers finding issues with herbicide-resistant weeds

Posted: Updated:

Growers in the Wyo-braska region are having issues with a strong strain of herbicide-resistant weeds.
These weeds, known as 'Kochia' have become a nuisance to local growers in western Nebraska and south eastern Wyoming.

Weed Specialist Robert Wilson says 'Kochia' has gotten so difficult for growers to control, as the weeds are becoming more and more resistant to herbicides such as Round-Up.

Wilson says researchers at the UNL Panhandle Research and Extension Center are conducting experiments with 'Kochia' and testing their reaction to different amounts of herbicides.

The Extension Center will also be hosting a workshop for growers to discuss the issue.
"And in that workshop we're going to be discussing ways of dealing with herbicide resistant weeds. Not necessarily resistant to round up, but we also have weeds that are resistant to other herbicides that we've been using for a number of years."
The weed workshop will be held at the extension center on Friday, January 24, at 9 a.m.
