Flu outbreak hitting region

Posted: Updated:

Flu activity is increasing, and influenza related hospitalizations are on the rise across the state of Nebraska.

The Department of Health and Human Services says that there has already been several flu-related deaths this season.

In Scottsbluff, Regional West Medical Center has increased its patient visitation restrictions until further notice.

Traditionally, it is older people that are more susceptible to getting the flu. But Community Health Nurse Hannah Weisgerber says this year's virus is hitting a different demographic.

"We have seen all age groups affected by influenza this year," explains Weisgerber. "But it is hitting especially hard with the younger population; the children and young adults have been getting a lot of influenza this year."

Weisgerber says despite the high amount flu-like activity, it is still not late for you to get vaccinated to try and prevent getting ill.

She adds that this is just the beginning of flu season, and anyone who did not get the flu shot can still schedule an appointment to get one.
