Australian artist Paul 'Walking Stick' Taylor shares culture with students

Posted: Updated:

Australian performing artist Paul 'Walking Stick' Taylor spent last week visiting with elementary students in Alliance to share history and sounds of Aboriginal culture.

Things were a little messy when Taylor stepped into an art class at Grandview Elementary.

There, students painted wind instruments called dideridoos.

Taylor says the ancient Australian culture ties in with American Indian traditions and it's great teaching the similarities to students.

"Taking an ancient Aboriginal tradition from Australia and that's what I've been teaching is Australian culture. My European heritage but also Aboriginal culture and making dideridoos in the classroom and teaching the whole culture history around it and it's a beautiful tradition." Said Taylor.

Students say they enjoyed painting stories on their wind instruments about someone or something special to them.

"Here's my dad, my mom had seven miscarriages so I put them all on there," said fourth grader Meagan Morgan showing off her art project. "There's my sister and then me and my brother Mason...he is nine months."

Taylor, who lives in Laramie, travels to Australia each year to spend time with family and studying Australian culture.
