Scottsbluff water main break fixed, school to resume on Wednesday

Posted: Updated:

Scottsbluff water crews have successfully replaced a 12 inch water main in the 2600 block of Broadway after a break occurred around 11:15 p.m. on Monday.

The break caused Bluffs Middle School and CHOICES to be closed Tuesday, but classes will resume on Wednesday.

Because there is no water available at either site, students and staff should not report. However all other school in this district are open.

Scottsbluff Water Systems Supervisor Jack Satur says at least one north bound lane on Broadway will be closed for the next few days as crews repair the road after replacing the main.

"We go through four or five main breaks a year. It's been a couple or three years since we had one in Broadway," said Satur. "I mean it just comes with the age. It's just some that deteriorates in time. Something we'll have to budget and replace down the road."

Satur believes the 12 inch water main to have been installed in the late 60s.

He says at the time of the break the grounds along with the sidewalk on the west side of Pioneer Park and the entire CHOICES parking lot was under water.

There is still no word on what caused the main to break. Satur says a main can break for many reasons including warm temperatures causing frost breaks, the ground shifting or outdated pipes.
