Lawmaker's continue discussions on novelty lighters

Posted: Updated:

A bill to ban the retail sale of novelty lighters that resemble toys is sparking debate among Nebraska lawmakers.

Senators failed to reach a vote Tuesday on a proposal intended to keep the lighters away from children.

Supporters say some of the lighters resemble toys, animals, cell phones and cameras. They say children are naturally drawn to the lighters and could hurt themselves or damage property.

However some opponents questioned if the legislature is crossing the line on regulating people's lives.

"If you look at these lighters… if it's so bad, why aren't we outlawing lighters period?" questioned Papillion Senator Bill Kitner. "You know, while we're at it, how about candles?"

Fifteen states have passed similar laws, and neighboring states of South Dakota and Colorado have pending bills relating to novelty lighters.
