Cattle prices continue to skyrocket with cattle population on the decline

U.S. production of beef is expected to decline this year by at least five percent.

A continual shortage in the nation's producing cattle population is a contributing factor to the decline.

University of Nebraska Panhandle Extension Educator Tom Holman says rising cattle prices don't necessarily mean higher beef prices on the shelf, but that is likely to happen.

"If we have shorter supply, and demand stays where it is, prices have got to go up," explains Holman. "And if the retailer sees an opportunity to raise prices, he will."

Holman says the numbers of producing cattle have been down for at least five years.
