A Scottsbluff man armed with a handgun has been shot following a standoff with law enforcement officers.

Captain Brian Wasson tells KOTA Territory News that Scottsbluff Police were dispatched to a disturbance at 117 Mary Lane shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Police say initial reports say 29-year-old Matthew Schwab was yelling in the streets and possibly armed with a knife. When they tried to talk to the Schwab, he retreated into an R.V. on 16th Avenue. While doing so, officers saw he was armed with a handgun.

The Scotts Bluff County SWAT Team was dispatched and secured the scene. Once Schwab exited the camper with the gun, Scottsbluff Police Officer Matthew Herbel fired two rounds at the suspect.

Schwab suffered two gunshot wounds and was transported to Regional West Medical Center. A spokesperson at the hospital says that Schwab remains in critical condition.

Law Enforcement officers remained on the scene until about 1:20 a.m. Wednesday.

Officer Herbel is an 11-year veteran of the Scottsbluff Police Department, and has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
