One Alliance program celebrating one million hours of volunteerism

Posted: Updated:

Members of the Box Butte County 'Retired Senior Volunteer Program' are set to celebrate more than one million hours of service in the county on Thursday in Alliance.

Director of RSVP Terry Grosz says breaking the one millionth hour mark happened in November. But she says her volunteers have been busy throughout the community and have yet to officially celebrate.

Grosz says the first hour of volunteering dates back 40 years ago.

Today, RSVP has 365 volunteers who help with 63 non-profit organizations. Grosz says her volunteers serve at several events and places from food drives, nursing homes to 4-H events.

She says they are the cream of the crop when it comes to volunteerism.

"They enjoy what they do," says Grosz. "They are just servants and they don't even recognize how valuable they are....they think everyone volunteers but not everyone does."

There will be an open house volunteer celebration at the Senior Center Thursday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Anyone is invited.
