Torrington Livestock hosts fundraiser to help long-time employee, friend

Posted: Updated:

Cattleman and community members come together for an auction, to raise money for a KOTA Territory man who was badly injured during a livestock accident.

Leroy Milligan was severely injured back in November 2013 after he was bucked off a horse and kicked in the stomach.

The horse ruptured Milligan's spleen, causing severe internal bleeding, and surgery was needed.

"Leroy has been a part of our business and a part of our staff for 27–years plus," says Michael Schmitt, co-owner of the Torrington Livestock Market.  "He started here when he was in college and has been here every year since."

To help out their long–time employee and friend, the Torrington Livestock Market hosted a reverse cattle auction.

Within 15–minutes, the community helped raise more than $22,000 to help Milligan's family with medical expenses.

"It just completely exemplifies what our community is about...what we stand for here in the West," says Schmitt.  "When somebody needs a hand, we'll give it."

The calf used in yesterday's reverse–auction was donated by the Skavdahl family of Sioux County.
