YMCA introduces "Pickleball" to panhandle

Posted: Updated:

It started in the retirement communities of sunny Arizona, now Pickleball has made its way to KOTA Territory.

A cross between ping–pong, badminton and tennis, Pickleball is gaining momentum the recreational sporting world.

It's played on a reduced-size basketball court, with something similar to a tennis net, and small wooden paddles, and a whiffle ball.

The Scottsbluff YMCA hosted an introductory Pickleball class earlier this week, to introduce people to the game.

Trevor Coxbill, Day Camp and Program Director for the YMCA, says Pickleball is an engaging game that's mostly geared toward seniors, but anyone is welcome to play.

"It's a short court, very small, so you don't have the tennis court size where you have to run a mile just to get the ball, so that's why its good for our senior members, but its good for anybody in general," Coxbill said.

Another introduction to Pickleball class will be held Friday January 31, in the YMCA's North Gym at 10 a.m.
