GHS band awarded keno funds to purchase new uniforms

Posted: Updated:

After 19 years, new band uniforms are coming to Gering High School.
The Gering City Council approved the release of $30,000 dollars worth of keno funds to help the Gering high school band buy new uniforms.

Students in the band say the uniforms they wear are older then they are.

Some issues were raised by the Council about why the school wasn't able to provide funds to purchase band uniforms in 19 years, when sporting teams get new equipment and uniforms regularly.

Keno Committee Chairman Darrell Bentley said he wasn't sure why, but said he didn't want to penalize the kids in band because they aren't getting what they need from the school board.
"Our reasoning, of course, is for community betterment in a way it's just the band, but the band represents our community when they leave. So I have a strong feeling towards helping the kids."
The money will help purchase around 120 new uniforms.

Keno funds were also approved to help the Gering Merchants purchase new city Christmas lights, and for the Gering Convention and Visitors Bureau.
