City of Torrington enacts quiet zone

Posted: Updated:

The annoying sound of train horns echoing through Torrington at all hours of the day and night are finally gone.

The new–found silence is all thanks to Torrington's new rail road quiet zone.

It took several years for the Torrington community to get the quiet zone in–place but residents are thrilled.  And so are employees at Torrington's Holiday Inn Express, which sits directly next to the rail road track.

General Manager Jana Ross says the quiet zone has helped to improve the hotel's atmosphere.

"My employees put me on the train-side, which is what we call it, and I was elated because I had a couple hours of sleep that night," says Ross.  "I didn't hear any trains.  So it was nice.  And my guests, we've had great reviews.  They keep coming up and telling me they're not hearing any trains."

The city went through a lengthy process and implemented a number of safety improvements to qualify for approval from the Federal Rail Administration (FRA) to enact the quiet zone.
