SBNM Conestoga wagon sent to Kansas for refurbishment

Posted: Updated:

People who have driven by the Scotts Bluff National Monument recently may have noticed something is missing, and the oxen in front of the visitors center look a little funny,

that's because the old-fashioned Conestoga wagon the oxen used to be pulling has been sent away to Kansas for restoration.

Park Ranger Lesley Gaunt says the wagon was purchased in 1973, and this is the first time has left the Monument.

But Gaunt says after nearly 40 years of hot, dry summers and cold, windy winters, it was time to for a little refurbishment.

"Its made of heavy oak, white oak, and the wood is good, but it still needs some TLC. The tongue, on the wagons that are out there, the tongue, it might need replacement."

Gaunt says the wagon should be back and in top–notch shape before the summer visiting season.
