City of Chadron to discuss potential roundabout at HWY 20/385 intersection

Posted: Updated:

The possibility of a new roundabout at a major northern panhandle intersection has recently been the topic of some heated debate.

The Highway 20/Highway 385 intersection in Chadron has been considered a "traffic problem" for a few years now.

The city is looking into the possibility of constructing a roundabout at the intersection for traffic control.

Chadron City Manager Wayne Anderson says the state studied the area in 2011, and recommended a roundabout, but the council at the time decided to table the issue due to too much opposition.

Anderson says some of the opposition comes from resistance to change, and possibly, a lack of information.

So he has been working with the city to gather public-input and hold presentations to better inform the community on roundabouts.

But Anderson says the complaints of congestion at the intersection haven't stopped, and the council has brought back the issue for re-evaluation.

"But again, there was quit a bit of opposition on it, and the council wanted to get feedback from the community so they have been receiving phone calls. It'll be back on the agenda for Monday night again, to discuss it some more."

The Chadron City Council will meet at 6 p.m. Monday night to further discuss the potential roundabout.

The meeting will be live streaming for the first time on the City of Chadron's website.
