A man convicted of capital murder in Cheyenne County in December, 2013 has been sentenced to spend the rest of his life behind bars.

48-year-old Craig Johnson was sentenced this afternoon in Cheyenne County District Court. A jury found him guilty in the murder of then-girlfriend April Smith.

Johnson was sentenced today to life imprisonment for First Degree Murder, 40-50 years for Use of a Weapon to Commit a Felony, and 10-20 years for Possession of a Deadly Weapon.  The sentences were ordered to run consecutively.  The judge stressed the heinous nature of the offense before handing down the sentences.

Cheyenne County Paul Schaub says the outcome of this case is attributed in large part to the diligent efforts of several law enforcement agencies, including the Cheyenne County Sheriff's Office, Nebraska State Patrol, Michigan State Patrol, and Michigan's Jackson County Sheriff's Office.  My thanks also goes out to the Nebraska Attorney General's Office.

He says that their work was outstanding.

It took a jury less than 3 hours to find Johnson guilty of all three charges at he conclusion of his trial.
