Cattle industry seeing all-time highs

Posted: Updated:

2014 is off to a good start for the cattle industry, as cattle continue to sell at all-time highs.

Co-owner of Torrington Livestock Market Mike Schmitt says the cattle market is unbelievable right now.  He says the USDA is calling for a market price of five - to - eight or higher.

Schmitt says compared to October, 500 pound steers are trading about $25 per-hundred weight higher.

"There's recent reports of 147 in the fat cattle trade in Kansas," says Schmitt.  "And we're sure that'll come North into the Nebraska area.  "And so we just continue to see all time-highs, not only in the live market, but on the feeder boards, as well."

Schmitt says there is some added value with the wiened hay-fed cattle coming-through.
