Sheriff's Office alerted to new mail scam in Scotts Bluff County

Posted: Updated:

A group posing to benefit family members of law enforcement officers is just one of the newest scams to hit the area.

Scotts Bluff County Sheriff Mark Overman says that his office has become of a mailing scam soliciting donations from area residents.

The group:

American Federation of Police & Concerned Citizens Police Family Survivor Fund

"Special Scotts Bluff County Area AFP & CC Annual Appeal... on behalf of the spouses of children of police officers killed in the line of duty,"  is based out of Titusville, Florida.

Overman says that they have checked with representatives all off of the groups representing law enforcement officer in Nebraska, and they were unable to confirm any donations from this group to the survivors of any Nebraska law enforcement officers.

He adds that an internet search of this group reveals a lot of negative information. They have a zero rating on the Charity Navigator website, and a "did not disclose" warning on the Better Business Bureau wise giving alliance site.

Overman says that anybody that is wishing to donate to families of fallen officers would be well served to date to the Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS), P.O. Box 3199, Camdenton MO, 65020. COPS has the highest rating given by the Charity Navigator site, and is well-known to Nebraska law-enforcement and is active with families of fallen Nebraska officers.
