Scottsbluff Rural FD: Saving lives one volunteer at a time

Posted: Updated:

During the month of February, we are be putting the spotlight on a select group of men and women who put their lives on the line: Volunteer Firefighters.

"It is a profession and it's rewarding just to give back to your community to help people in need." Paul Reisig has been a volunteer firefighter for Scottsbluff Rural since its inception back in 1995. "Our volunteers share a comradery among themselves."
Currently it's a group of 18 men and women, but they are always looking for more volunteers.
"They also need to have the desire to serve the community and that's what we do. We serve and protect the community."
The Scottsbluff Rural Fire Department is partially funded by a tax paid by people living in the district.... but also rely heavily on internal fundraising efforts.
"Trucks, everything...bunker gear, has just come up so much in price in the last ten years or so."
The department tries to fund those costs by hosting their annual pancake feed and soup supper.
"Those two entities also provide us with some extra money that we can utilize to sometimes put special things on our trucks or our grass rigs back in service or things like that."
Currently, Reisig says he could use an additional ten volunteers to help lighten the load for the other volunteers.
"We'd like to pick up some more volunteers. We can always use more."

If you would like to serve the community by becoming a volunteer firefighter, you can call Scottsbluff Rural at 635-1654 for more information.
