Panhandle resident pleased with motorcycle helmet ruling

Posted: Updated:

Some KOTA Territory motorcyclists are happy about the Legislature's ruling that will keep helmets on motorcyclists riding in Nebraska.

Opponents succeeded this week in blocking a bill in the legislature that would have repealed the state's helmet requirement.

The measure would have exempted riders older than 21 from the law.

Redo Celli from Celli's Cycle Center says his customers are pretty split on the issue.

Celli says he thinks it's a good ruling because of the safety factor.

"People should wear a helmet," says Celli.  "[The bill ] comes-up every year and it gets defeated every year.  I love freedom of choice.  But I do also see it from the medical aspects, if something were to happen."

Proponents of the bill say the issue is of personal choice and freedom.

Opponents say repealing the law would increase health care costs and make the roads less safe.
