City of Scottsbluff looks to revamp downtown

Posted: Updated:

Downtown Scottsbluff could be changing in the coming months.
Consultants from 'Dropseed Studios' of Omaha have been hired to design a new streetscape master plan for the downtown area.

The company will be looking at altering different areas of the city including landscaping, parking, and other downtown elements.

Scottsbluff City Planner Annie Folck says Dropseed Studios was chosen because of their experience with rain gardens and sustainable landscapes.

Folck says the city plans to incorporate storm water management in the plan, but the overall goal is to make the city's downtown more attractive to locals as well as visitors.

"We're hoping this will make it so that we have a lot more activity downtown we're hoping to get more events, make it more attractive so people see it as a destination, not really somewhere just to drive through, but somewhere they want to stay a while."

Folck says the consultants will be returning to Scottsbluff later this month to present their preliminary design plan, and to seek the public's input.
"And what they want to know from people is what areas they think they like, what areas should be a priority, should we be focusing more on Broadway or maybe on the side streets? How important is parking in all of this? Can we sacrifice a few parking spots for landscaping or do we need to keep those parking spots for businesses? So, we've got a lot of questions, and we're just hoping to get some input from the public to give us a little more direction."
The presentation will be held at 5:30P.m. at the Midwest Theater on Tuesday, February 25.
