Minatare/Melbeta Rural Fire Department a unique outlet

Posted: Updated:

During the month of February, we're putting the spotlight on a group of men and women who put their lives on the line to help their communities; volunteer firefighters.

Minatare Fire Chief Tom Case has been a member of the Minatare Volunteer Fire Department for the past 30 years.

Case says his dreams of becoming a firefighter began when he was just a boy. He says working as a volunteer fire fighter is rewarding, but also has its challenges.

"Minatare is kind of a different thing," says Case. "Our firemen own the station in Minatare.   Not the city or the rural [fd], the firemen ourselves. So we have to earn extra money to fix the building up."

Case says he and the other 20 volunteer firefighters in the Minatare / Melbeta region host fundraiser's thought out year to sustain the station.

Case says many volunteer fire departments also face equipment issues.

"The national fire and some of them are making changes every year and updating: 'You need this new equipment... You need this'.   And a lot of us are having problems trying to get that done because everything is so expensive."

Chief Case says the Minatare Fire Department budgets with the city and the rural department every year for the cost of equipment, trucks and truck repairs.
