Longfellow Elementary students help raise almost $3,000 for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Students at Longfellow Elementary School in Scottsbluff spent three weeks collecting spare change.

In that time they were able to raise a total of $2,294.13 through a 'Pennies for Patients' drive.

All the money will be donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to help children with the disease.

"The part that we really liked about it was that the money raised goes to children in Nebraska that are suffering from. it helps them pay for their treatments and medications and things like that," said School counselor Dallas Massey.

Massey says this was the first time Longfellow participated in he drive, and she wasn't sure how much could be raised, so they set a goal of $1,000.

She says she was blown away that the kids more than doubled, and almost tripled that initial $1,000 goal.
"We had a couple of twenty dollar bills donated, we had a lot of ones, and the kids brought some of their allowance in, and it was really heartwarming to see what they were willing to do to help others."

Massey said not only did the students help the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, they also learned some valuable life lessons.

"I think its very important for children to learn about empathy, primarily, and how it must feel for someone else who is suffering from a disease. And for them to be able to give to these children and in some way help them means a lot."
Massey says this drive was such a huge success, they are likely to participate again next year.
