Foundation nearly in place for BBGH addition

Posted: Updated:

A milestone was reached Wednesday, February 19 with the arrival of a piece of equipment used to pump cement for the Box Butte General Hospital new addition foundation.

Crews finished pouring cement for approximately half of the foundation that day, with the east and north sides to be completed soon, all dependent on the weather, of course.

Crews need the temperature to be well above 25 degrees when pouring cement to be sure it sets correctly.

The estimated $34 million project will include 25 new patient rooms, a new emergency department, public space and gift shop.

Hospital CEO Dan Griess also believes the new expansion will be a good opportunity for hiring new staff members.

"With the new expansion, I can definitely see more maintenance personnel, more environmental personnel. We're expanding the surgery department, the emergency department so I can also see expansion of professional staff as well. All related to the new addition and renovation."

The expansion is expected to take about three years to complete.
