Gering city council reject bids for new bathrooms at Legion Park

Posted: Updated:

A special city council meeting in Gering lasted about ten minutes this afternoon as members rejected bids for new restrooms at Legion Park.

The problem at hand is one of the restroom's walls is also a part of the bandshell located in the park.

Council members say at previous meetings there were several comments from the public not to demolish the bandshell because they felt it was historic.

Mayor Ed Mayo says now the Public Works and the Parks and Recreation committee will come up with an idea to either build a new bandshell, or a pavilion for entertainment.

But he says the restrooms are going to have to go eventually.

"The restrooms have issues to be addressed to the main sewer line underneath. It was put in there around 1920, maybe a little earlier plus or minus...it needs to be taken out and removed."

The council voted seven to one to reject the bid.
