Riverside Discovery Center: animals love weather this time of year

Posted: Updated:

As the temperatures dip under 40 degrees this weekend -- staff at the Riverside Discovery Center are preparing to keep animals warm.
Education Curator Kim Meidema says animals such as monkeys and chimps have indoor facilities to keep warm.

She says these animals generally stay indoors when temperatures are below 50 degrees.

But for animals that prefer the colder weather, the staff provides heated outdoor lamps for birds and underground dens for the bobcats and tigers.

Miedema says the winter months are the best time for visitors because some animals are more energetic.
"Our tigers for example are from Siberia Russia, they love the snow. Now when it's snowing they're playing with the snow, they're running, they're jumping, they're rolling in it. They really enjoy it."
Miedema went on to say that the tigers really enjoy having visitors this time of year and encourages anyone to visit the zoo throughout the week.
