Local fire crews prepare for wildfire season

Posted: Updated:

There are 27 days remaining until the first day of spring.

On that note, fire crews say wildfire season is right around the corner.

This week, the Scottsbluff Fire Department sponsored a Wildland Fire training refresher course.

About 50 local firefighters from eight different departments spent time in the classroom learning how to prepare for any wildfire-situation.

The class is taught each year to ensure that local firefighters are ready for whatever this season holds.

Gering Fire Chief Jay Templer says it's a good way to have everyone on the same page.

"2012 was a recent time when we had the fires all over western half of the state. And you know we had a very, very busy year. 2013 was very quiet for most of the fire department. The other day we saw that the Forest Service put out a notice that 2014 could be above average again for wildfires."

Officials say the potential for a very active wildfire season in the panhandle is high this year.
