Senators look to keep NE income-tax brackets in line with inflation

Posted: Updated:

As anticipated during much of this legislative session, state senators have been working to ‘fix' issues with the state's tax system.

And now, there may be good news for the future of income taxes in Nebraska.

A legislative panel proposed a bill this week that would ensure Nebraska's income–tax brackets keep pace with inflation.

The bill seeks to address cost–of–living salary increases that can bump taxpayers into a higher bracket, where they end up paying more.

Senators say the move could amount to a significant long–term tax cut.

The bill would also exempt some Social Security income that falls below certain thresholds.

Committee members moved the measure Friday with an 8–0 vote.
