Nebraska 'oil boom' not expected to last

Posted: Updated:

State officials say they don't expect the Nebraska 'oil boom' to hold up much longer.
New techniques did help oil production grow in southwest Nebraska last year, to an estimated that 2.8 million barrels produced statewide.

The Nebraska Oil and Gas Commission Director Bill Sydow says Last year's numbers made for the best oil year in Nebraska since 2001, as only 2.5 million barrels were produced in 2012.

But Sydow says he expects many of the new oil fields in Hitchcock and Dundy Counties will dry up by the end of 2014.
Despite the recent increases, Nebraska's oil production remains relatively small compared to other oil-producing states.
