City leaders scouting land for new panhandle landfill

Posted: Updated:
A new landfill is in the works for the twin-cities area.

The Gering landfill will be reaching capacity soon, and city leaders are already planning for where to build the next one.

Gering's Interim Director of Environmental Services, Darrell Vance, says the process is in the very beginning stages.

"This landfill, what we estimate is it would be 2016 when this landfill will be done, and it takes a minimum of seven to ten years to get a new landfill permitted so you have to get everything going ahead of time."

Vance says the new landfill is likely to go in a rural area of the Scottsbluff community.
