Senator Al Davis supports bill aimed to help elderly people living at home

Posted: Updated:

Nebraska state lawmakers spent the entire day discussing how to improve care to the elderly.
The bill would create the Aging Nebraskans Task force, that would help develop a system of in-home *and* community based long-term care services.

Under the bill, care providers would go to several elderly patients to check in on them and make sure they were still getting by with their daily functions.

Senator Al Davis says when he was campaigning, he came across some people that he knew shouldn't be living by themselves.
"I can think of one particular individual in Alliance," explained Davis. "When the woman opened the door she had two different shoes on and was extremely thin, and (I) was extremely concerned about her. She had no one in that community that could look out for her. So there was nobody who was aware of the triggers that were coming. And I finally contacted someone and said, 'You know, the woman next door, I really think needed some care'. I see this as a vehicle to get beyond that."
Lawmakers failed to advance the bill this morning, and debate on the bill will continue tomorrow.
