Bridgeport students win Mitchell Invitational Quiz Bowl

Posted: Updated:

Students of Bridgeport Public Schools were the winners of the 4th Annual Mitchell Invitational Quiz Bowl.

More than 50 students competed in the all-day event at Mitchell High School.
Other schools to compete included Gordon-Rushville and Hemingford High School.

This year, each school had a junior varsity and varsity team. Mitchell teacher and co-organizer, Deb Starkey, says the change gives more students an opportunity to compete.

Contestants competed in three different rounds and the winning team which earned the most points received a plaque and medals.

Students answered questions in categories including current events, history and math.

Mitchell students say the quiz bowl is a great way to share competitive knowledge with other students.
"I'm pretty competitive. It's pretty fun," said senior Adam Schlotthauer. "Once you get in kind of a flow of the game, just like in sports, it's kind of just automatic. You kind of know what to do and you kind of just go in and do it and have a good time."

Mitchell senior Stephanie Alfred agreed.

"Quiz bowl for me is just an opportunity to kind of share knowledge with other people. We have some of the best students in our school involved in this activity."

Hemingford's varsity team and Mitchell's junior varsity placed second.

Next month, students from each school will participate in a bigger competition called the Western Trails Conference in Bayard.
